Background

The Town of Frisco is inseparable from the natural environment that surrounds the community.

The network of streams, wetlands, riparian areas, and wildlife habitat connecting to the large contiguous US Forest Service and Denver Water lands, including Dillon Reservoir, all contribute to our unique setting. With its proximity to the Eagles Nest Wilderness area, Frisco enjoys a very high water quality.

Non-native plants and threats to existing vegetation such as pine beetle are becoming an increasing concern in Frisco and the adjacent areas.

Policy

The Town of Frisco shall utilize the following policies with regard to ensuring the preservation of the community's natural resources:

  • Use water conservation practices: Implement appropriate and effective water conservation practices in all aspects of Town duties. Explore ways to use recycled water for Town operations.
  • Use sustainable landscaping: Utilize native or adapted plants. Minimize irrigation through plant selection or clustering of plants that require water. Reduce turf and grass.
  • Manage natural resource areas: Maintain the Town's natural resources and when possible, manage these resources to address issues such as noxious weeds and beetle infestation.
  • Alternatives to non-organic chemicals: When they exist and are practicable, use alternatives to non-organic chemicals compounds on the Town's roadways, noxious weeds, landscaping (including fertilizers) and other applications as new technologies become available and cost effective.
  • Support efforts to address global warming and environmental stewardship: Participate with credible organizations that address issues such as global warming and environmental stewardship on the local, regional, national and international levels.
  • Enhance wetlands protection: Utilize expanded buffers to protect sensitive wetlands, where appropriate.
  • Lake Dillon water quality protection: Look for opportunities to reduce nutrient loadings and other sources of contamination to Lake Dillon.
  • Source water protection: Develop/implement a source water protection plan to protect groundwater quality near Town drinking water wells.
  • Visibility protection: Work collaboratively with the County, other local governments and the state to prevent visibility deterioration in the Eagles Nest Wilderness Area and the mountains surrounding Frisco.
