ES2 Transportation

Background

Transportation, specifically the combustion of fossil fuels in vehicles, is the single largest source of human-made greenhouse gases. Furthermore, the extraction and transportation of fossil fuels can cause serious damage to sensitive and pristine ecosystems. As global temperatures continue to rise, and as fossil fuel sources are depleted, local efforts to improve transportation alternatives are increasingly important.

Policy

The Town of Frisco will support the use of alternative modes of transportation and alternative fuels for Town vehicles when practicable, through the following policies:

  • Enhance alternative modes of travel: Support efforts and provide opportunities for employees to use alternative modes of travel during daily work trips, (e.g., use of bicycles, public transportation, car pooling, etc.).
  • Employee travel incentives: Provide incentives for Town employees to use alternative forms of transportation to and from work, and/or work-from-home alternatives as appropriate.
  • Use alternative fuel sources: Investigate and implement the use of alternative fuels (such as biodiesel) in the Town's heavy equipment fleet.
  • Vehicle purchases: When practical alternatives exist, consider alternative fuel and/or hybrid options for all new Town vehicle purchases.
  • Encourage public transportation vehicles to use alternative energy: Support efforts to encourage the use of alternative fuel/energy sources for public transportation.
  • Minimize long-distance travel and carpool: Where possible minimize long-distance travel by using telephone and web conference options. Consider car-pooling with other employees and/or organizations when travel is required.
