LIGHTHOUSE REVIEW
WINTER NEWSLETTER ~ 2011-12
HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND NEW YEAR!!
FROM THE HELM: Phil Hofer, Certified Marina Manager
Thank you again for another amazing season. The slow start with weather and water level issues did not stop us from having another fun filled summer. The new shoreline, beach, and pier turned out to be a great addition to the marina. The marina crew worked hard to get the marina up and running and put away this season and I must thank them for their efforts.
People always ask what Jenn and I do during the winter months at a marina. Well the answer is easy: PLAN for the upcoming season and beyond. If anyone has suggestions for the 2013 season this is the time that I start to put together the 2013 Budget. We also attend boat shows and marina conferences to gain more knowledge, ideas and exposure to make your experience at the marina more enjoyable.
On a personal note, I have been attending on line classes since January 2009 for a Masters of Science in Organizational Leadership from the Colorado State University Global Campus. I have completed 11 out of 12 classes and plan to complete my capstone project by the end of February 2012. This program has been a wonderful experience for me and I have been able to apply many of the concepts and ideas to the marina. I feel that both the internal and external customers have benefitted from my efforts with this coursework and look forward to growing as a manager and leader.
Thank you again for this wonderful opportunity to work and play with and for you, as it is your love and passion for boating that gives me this opportunity. Thank you for picking Frisco Bay Marina as your boating destination.
Office News: Jenn Shimp, Marina Office Manager
Hello and thank you from the entire marina crew for a great 2011! We hope you all had an enjoyable 2011 boating season. We are currently closing up the books for 2011 and are anxiously waiting for a great 2012 as well. For those who have other seas to sail, we wish you calm seas and a steady breeze for your next adventure.
What a beautiful fall. Thankfully the snow came later this year, and left all of us with many opportunities to get that last sail in or get that last little thing done to our boats before the snow and cold really started to come to the lake.
The staff at the Frisco Bay Marina is always looking for ways to improve services in order to provide guests and visitors with the best possible marina experience. Again this year, we are asking for your feedback on the services in which you participated in this past year of 2011; the link to this survey is listed below. As a thank you for completing the survey, there will be a random drawing for a $200 marina credit, which can be used for any services or products available at the Frisco Bay Marina. To receive the $200 credit, please make sure to provide your name on the survey. The survey is anonymous; all we will see is a list of names who took the survey if you put your name in at the end.

Thank you again and have a Safe and Happy Holiday Season!!
A NEW YEAR:
With the start of this New Year I would like to remind everyone of a few things.
To be a customer at the Frisco Bay Marina these few things must be current:
1) Current Storage Agreement
This is now an electronic document. The contract is sent out to your email address that we have on file. You must complete a new contract every season.
2) Proof of Insurance is required on all vessels –Kayaks and Canoes excluded.
All vessels stored at the marina MUST carry insurance. A copy of your insurance needs to be kept at the marina office. The Town of Frisco/Frisco Bay Marina needs be named as “additionally insured” on your policy. Once you name the Frisco Bay Marina as “additionally insured”, your insurance company will send us a copy of your continued coverage every year as long as you pay them. Then you don’t have to think about it again. For any questions on this look at your storage agreement under insurance and feel free to call the office with any questions.
3) No Outstanding Balances
If your account is more than one season past due you must contact the office to rectify the outstanding balance before your boat will be allowed to be stored at the marina or conversely leave the marina.
A NOTE ABOUT HOLDOVERS:
If you are not planning on storing your boat, canoe, kayak or trailer with FBM, the vessel must be removed from the marina property within 10 days of the agreement’s expiration date. After that time, storage is based on the published daily rate. If you require more time to remove your vessel; please communicate your needs and we will try to make accommodations.
* Storage time frames are:
Canoes & Kayaks:
Summer ~ May 15 – October 15
Winter ~ October 15 – May 15
Annual ~ May 15 to May 15
Power & Sailboats:
Summer ~ May 15 – October 15
Winter ~ November 1 – May 15
SUMMER TRAILER STORAGE:
Summer trailer storage is not included with slip and mooring fees. We are offering a savings of 10% off summer trailer storage with all payments received on or before February 15th. You must mention this discount at the time of payment. There is a limited amount of trailer storage available, so sign up early!
LOCAL STORAGE DISCOUNT:
The marina will offer a discount for boat storage to Frisco residents. A Frisco resident must show a current driver’s license showing the address to be withinFriscoTownlimits. The office will take a photo copy to keep on record for town audits. Bills, leases, deeds, library card, etc…will NOT be accepted. The resident will receive 3% off one choice of storage once per fiscal year. It is the responsibility of the resident to chose and let the office know which storage option to have the discount applied to. The office will ask each year to see the current driver’s license and take a photo copy to keep on record. The discount will not be applied until the photo copy has been made for the records.
NEW FOR 2012:
DOCK ADDITIONS:
T Dock is the last plastic dock to be replaced. The marina staff removed T Dock from the water last fall making room for another Atlantic Meeco galvanized steel frame and concrete decked dock. The new dock will be similar to B and C docks with 14 double berths that are 26’ wide and 30’ long. E and T docks will both be 24’ wide and 24’ long. Security gates will now be located on all guest and visitor docks and a new transition plate will be affixed to the beginning of the long gangways going to D, E, and T docks to provide handicap access to the long walkway. A new gangway will be affixed to the long rowing club dock to provide easier access when the water levels are low and provide handicap access.
Some of you might have noticed that fire extinguishers were added to each dock (3) and gangway (1) this past fall. This is a continuing effort to provide you with a safe and healthy environment for you and your vessel. Please notify marina staff if you have utilized one of these units or you noticed that one is out of service. Safety ladders will also be strategically added to each dock for easier egress from the chilly waters of Dillon Reservoir.
PIER ADDITIONS:
Additional trash and recycle bins will be located on the pier to facilitate a clean and convenient location to deposit your refuse. Additional bike racks and solar lights will be place on the pier for your convenience and safety this summer. Thank you for your patience as we continue to develop and enhance the new pier.
AQUATIC NUSIANCE INSPECTIONS & THE LAUNCH RAMP:
Thank you for your continued patience with the inspection situation that has swept this nation. Please note that all boats will be inspected before entering the water in the spring. If you plan to launch your own boat in the water and it is not tagged, it must be inspected, even if your vessel has been in storage and/or at your house the entire time. If the vessel is tagged,Marinastaff will still need to obtain information required by the state. We strive to make this process as quick as possible and appreciate your patience with this process. We will continue the evening closures of the launch ramp for the 2012 season. If you wish to spend a longer time on the lake or get an earlier start, you can rent a slip or a mooring ball for the night. As always, please Clean, Drain, and Dry your entire vessel.
We will be placing signs on the launch ramp limiting launching on the ramp to powerboats and sailboats only. Kayaks and canoes need to launch off the launch dock, the beach, the pier, or anywhere else along the shoreline of the lake. We have had some instances of collisions on the ramp. Please remember that the launch ramp and lighthouse circle is for launching not loading and rigging.
WE ARE IN HIGH DEMAND:
Due to the continued high demand for all storage services at the marina, please let us know your plans for the 2012 season by Wednesday, February 15, 2012. You must remit your payment in full via cash, check, credit card (Visa or MasterCard only), or by calling Jenn to make your payment by phone.
DRY STORAGE CUSTOMERS:
With the new fenced and gated yard we have moved to a valet style boat removal from dry storage. We request that you call and let us know at least one day in advance if you would like to retrieve your boat from dry storage. No personal vehicles will be allowed past the gate. We will pull your boat out and make it accessible for you. We will not be able to retrieve boats without prior notice, especially on weekends. Please plan ahead and give us a call to get your boat out. All trailers must be in working condition including hitches, jack stands, winches, and tires. The marina staff will contact you if there are any defects.
RACK STORAGE CUSTOMERS:
The new canoe and kayak launching dock and beach launch was competed this past spring. We hope you enjoyed the larger and lower dock, the handicap accessible ramp, and the flip up cleats to attach your boat for a moment to the dock. The cleats can also be used as a hand hold but flip down to allow you to enter your canoe or kayak without catching your clothes on them. The rope that is put across the beach at night and some of you see in the morning is for the geese. We have found that geese will not go over or under a rope stretched across the beach. This cost effective method has saved much in the way of costly geese repellant sprays and mitigation efforts as well as goose poop clean up. If you launch your canoe or kayak on the beach before the marina staff arrives please do not take down the rope prior to 8 am. Thanks from the goose poop clean up crew.
FEBRUARY 15th:
Slip and rack storage customers must pay 100% of the seasonal fee by February 15, 2012. If payment is not received by February 15, 2012 you are subject to forfeiting your space. Slips accommodate one boat; you may not store canoes or kayaks in a slip. A small dinghy may be stored toward the front of the slip. Rack spaces can accommodate one canoe, or one tandem, or two single kayaks. No kayaks or canoes are allowed to be stored on the ground. NO SEPARATE PARTIES ON A RACK.
PARKING:
The parking lot has been getting very full on Friday evenings with the great activities the Island Grill has been hosting. People have been starting to double park in the truck and trailer spaces, especially when that is all there is left. There is very little we can do about this phenomenon. We have signs in place stating it is truck and trailer parking only, but it still happens and will happen. The marina cannot give tickets, and the town officers have expressed that they don’t want to give tickets to people who are here spending money in our town. We do have an overflow dirt parking lot at the entrance to the marina and the trailhead parking lot to utilize as well. Many marinas I have been to recently do not have parking right near the water and walking a distance after dropping your boat off is not unheard of. So the rule of thumb to avoid having to park in those overflow lots on busy weekends is to come early.
FOURTH OF JULY PARKING:
Parking on the Fourth of July will be the same as the past. A security company will be hired again to hand park every car all day. If there are no available parking spots then you will not be allowed to enter at that time. Please turn around and either park in town or try entering again as a vehicle may have left while you were turning around. The launch ramp will be closed to day boaters due to the lack of truck and trailer parking. If you have a slip or mooring and you have not launched your vessel by this day you may still launch at the Frisco Bay Marina ramp. The marina will be closed to all vehicles (except placarded handicapped vehicle) entering at 4:00 pm. Please plan ahead to enter the marina before 4:00 pm.
REFUNDS:
Refunds are subject to a $60 administration fee and must be requested by May 15, 2012.
TENANT TRANSFERS:
Tenant transfers are requests from customers in good financial standing that wish to relocate within their category. For those of you who have made a request for a transfer, we will try to accommodate your request after we determine the status of the other tenants. Transfer requests can be sent in with your seasonal payment or called into the office.
DENVER BOAT SHOW:
The Frisco Bay Marina will be attending the 2012 Denver Boat Show as a vendor so please stop by the booth. The Show is January 13th through 15th at the Convention Center in downtown Denver. The marina has discounted tickets available. For more information visit the website: www.denverboatshow.com
WINTER LEARNING:
Sail Care: Each spring and fall when you remove and install your sails it is a great time to check them over for any damage. The most common failure of sails is the stitching in the seams especially on roller furlers where the sacrificial sail is left in the sun all summer. Most thread at this altitude left in the sun all summer will last about three years. If you catch the deterioration of the thread before your sail comes apart it is much easier and less expensive to repair. The thread will start looking fuzzy and with light perpendicular pressure by your fingers the thread will come apart. Do not pull the fabric apart more than two inches. When you are laying out your sails to either fold or roll up for the year or bringing them out, pay special attention to the leech, anywhere the sail may rub against your stays, especially the battens if your mainsail has a large roach. If you do find a small tear on your sail it normally means it got snagged on something during a tack, most likely on your stays. Repairing the sail will mean nothing if you don’t find where it snagged and fix that as well. Depending on the size of the tear you may need to get it sewn back up. My rule of thumb is anything under the size of a nickel can be repaired with sail tape, the proper weight and type for your sail, properly sized, edged, sealed, rounded, and applied to both sides. Anything bigger you will want to get stitched especially on a spinnaker. Do not put duck tape on your sail. The glue is very challenging to remove and will leave a residue behind that will pick up all sorts of debris. Of course if it’s an emergency do what you have to do to get yourself home safe but your sail repairer will have an easier time repairing it and cost you less time if you don’t. Remember to always cover your mainsail if left on the boat during the summer and check your cover for thread and fabric deterioration from the sun. High winds on Dillon Reservoir can take a cover and destroy it if it is not in good condition. If you have a sail or cover that needs to be repaired, the winter is a great time to get that done while you are not missing any great sailing days because your sail is in the shop. If you are thinking about purchasing a new sail then this is the time to make your order. You may shop on line or call Todd Morgan, our Mack Sails representative here inSummitCounty.
