Winter Newsletter ~ 2009

From the Helm:

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

Hello and Thank You from the entire marina crew for a great 2009 boating season!  We all worked hard to make your time here at the Frisco Bay Marina enjoyable and we look forward to your return for the 2010 boating season. For those who have other seas to sail, we wish you calm seas and a steady breeze for your next adventure.

We have had an exciting fall.  The snow came early, left for a while and has now returned to freeze the lake to provide us with winter entertainment opportunities and, hopefully, high water levels next season.

We would like to spotlight two very special members of our crew:  Tom Hogeman and Jon Drabik.  This season will be their 15th season at the Marina and the operations at the Marina run smoothly, in large part, due to their efforts.

Tom Hogeman is the Service Manager and is a Certified Technician with Johnson/Evinrude outboard motors and does most of the repairs on the engines at the Marina.  He is an excellent problem solver when it comes to engine troubles. He starts working at the Marina early in the spring and finishes when all boats have been “put to bed for the season.”  During the Marina off-season, he is a supervisor for Copper Mountain Ski School.  He also enjoys spending time with his two kids.

Jon Drabik is the Operational Manager for the yard and docks.  He is a certified Harbor Master from Massachusetts.  Jon has an exceptional memory for boats and their respective places and owners.  He starts getting the Marina back together early in the spring and stays late into the fall.  During the off-season, he works as a private ski instructor for Copper Mountain and is one of the most requested instructors at Copper Mountain.  He also enjoys spending time with his three kids and introducing them to water activities.

Staff at the Marina is always looking for ways to improve services in order to provide guests with the best possible Marina experience.  Therefore, we are asking for your feedback on the services in which you participated in this past year; the link to this survey is listed below.  As a thank you for completing the survey, there will be a random drawing for a $200 Marina credit, which can be used for any services or products available at the Marina. Make sure to provide your name and email and/or phone number on the survey.

Thank you again and have a Safe and Happy Holiday Season!!

NEW FOR 2010:

Denver Water and the Town of Frisco have approved plans for a Pier Redevelopment Project.  The entire project will be constructed in three phases with most of the construction happening in the fall, winter and spring months to lessen impacts on Marina operations.  Phase 1 will begin winter 2009 and be completed late spring or early summer of 2010.  This phase will consist of a retaining wall at the ramp, extending to the west, with a beach and new dock for kayaks and canoes.  To gain depth for that area, some earth will be removed.  Plans for all phases are posted in the Marina office; feel free to call if you have any questions or concerns regarding your visit with Frisco Bay Marina.

There are even more projects planned for the 2010 season.  Along with the Pier Redevelopment project, we are continuing in our effort to go paperless with online work orders, contracts, and email billings.  We will be making a new C dock with 30’ long slips; the old C will become the new B dock.   The plastic docks will be phased out; however, one of the old plastic docks will continue to be used as a temporary dock for short term rentals.

ZEBRA MUSSELS & THE LAUNCH RAMP:

Thank you for your patience with the zebra mussel situation that has swept this nation.  Due to the nature of the Invasive Species, all boats will be inspected before entering the water in the spring.  Please understand if you launch your own boat in the water and it is not tagged, it must still be inspected, even if your vessel has been in storage and/or at your house the entire time.  If the vessel is tagged, Marina staff will need to obtain information required by the state.  We strive to make this process as quick as possible and appreciate your patience with this process.  We will continue the evening closures of the launch ramp for the 2010 season.  If you wish to spend a longer time on the lake, you can rent a slip or a mooring ball for the night.    As always, please Clean, Drain, and Dry your entire vessel.

IN HIGH DEMAND:

Due to the high demand for all storage services at the marina, please let us know your plans for the 2010 season by Monday, February 15, 2010.  You must remit your payment in full via cash, check, credit card (Visa or MasterCard only), or by calling Jenn to make your payment by phone.

DRY STORAGE AND RACK STORAGE CUSTOMERS:

Dry storage and rack storage customers must pay 100% of the seasonal fee by February 15, 2010.  If payment is not received by February 15, 2010, you are subject to forfeit of your space.  Rack spaces can accommodate one canoe, or one tandem, or two single kayaks.  No kayaks or canoes are allowed to be stored on the ground.  NO SEPARATE PARTIES PLEASE.

REFUNDS:

Refunds are subject to a $60 administration fee and must be requested by May 15, 2010.

TENANT TRANSFERS:

Tenant transfers are requests from customers in financial good standing that wish to relocate within their category.  For those of you who have made a request for tenant transfer, we will try to accommodate your request after we determine the status of the other tenants.  Transfer requests can be sent in with your season payment or called into the office.

DENVER BOAT SHOW:

The Frisco Bay Marina will be attending the 2010 Denver Boat Show as a vendor so please stop by the booth.  The Show is be January 15th through 18th at the Convention Center in downtown Denver.  For more information visit the website: www.denverboatshow.com.

WINTER LEARNING:

This fall we had to quickly move many boats from their respective slips to a different location.  The biggest problem for our staff was trying to get boats untied from its slip.  Because of this, we would like to remind everyone the proper way to tie a boat up to a slip.  You want to have, at a minimum, a bow and a stern line; the line should run to the cleat and go once around the ba

se then over ONCE on one side of the cleat.  To finish, take a loop and put it around the other end with the tail of the line coming underneath the loop.  This loop locks everything in place.  You will end with a nice coil of line on the dock, not wrapped around the cleat itself.  Check out these sets of pictures.  A second line from the bow to the center slip cleat is also helpful to keep your boat from moving around in the slip.  Keep in mind, however, that you may share that cleat with your slip mate.  The real way to keep your boat in a tight spot is to add spring lines.  These lines run from the bow and the stern of the boat to the opposite end of the dock or if you have a mid-ship cleat, from there to both the bow and the stern of the dock.  Remember, if you use spring lines you may end up tying a cleat on another line and the cleaner you make your ties on the cleats the easier the whole process will be.  The tie and the coil should be on the dock not on your boat.
